River Tramps

River Tramps began in Nashville in 2015, when Adam and Rio met working at a honky-tonk on Broadway. A conversation over after-shift side work led to a writing date they kept indefinitely.

Within months, they had recorded their first EP, burned two hundred copies onto CDs, handwritten The Backpack Demos across newspaper inserts, and taken them on the road.

What followed was a decade of touring, recording, moving, starting over, and steadily expanding the boundaries of what River Tramps could sound like. From clubs in Nashville and long runs across the country to a Spanish EP recorded in California, the husband-and-wife duo built their music through experience rather than formula. Along the way, they repeatedly found themselves being asked to make the project easier to categorize. Instead, they kept following whatever felt most creatively alive.

After years spent largely in motion, River Tramps landed in Portland in late 2024. A quiet winter spent watching Westerns, learning mandolin, and taking their first real pause from touring in years gave shape to the songs that would become their newest body of work.

They eventually settled on the Washington coast, where those songs continued to evolve through months of full-band rehearsals and recording. The result is a new chapter for River Tramps: music grounded in roots traditions but increasingly unconcerned with where those traditions are supposed to end.

After four EPs and a decade spent figuring out what River Tramps was supposed to be, Adam and Rio are no longer particularly interested in the question.

They know what it is now.
